Skincare Advice

Skinfit Studio is a passionate advocate for skincare.

The benefits of your facial treatment can be ineffective if you fail to follow a good skincare regime at home, similar to neglecting teeth brushing and relying solely on occasional dentist appointments to maintain oral health.

By incorporating effective skincare practices into your daily regimen, you can enhance and prolong the benefits of professional treatments, ensuring long-lasting skin health.

Common skincare mistakes

Over-exfoliation of the skin

Overuse of active acids and retinol and using the wrong skincare ingredients for your skin type can all cause excessive amounts of exfoliation to the skin’s surface and an impaired barrier.

Buying by influence

When it comes to purchasing skincare products, it's important to make informed decisions rather than be swayed by superficial factors such as buying a product based on its scent, texture, or fancy-sounding ingredients. Don't let massive billboard campaigns, endorsements from unlicensed and untrained professionals and influencers and trending products on social media dictate your choices.

Being inconsistent with your routine

Purchasing an excessive number of skincare products from various brands and failing to use them can have negative effects or even prove  ineffective for your skin. Instead of overwhelming your skincare routine, focused on a selective few, high-quality products that address your skincare concerns. Quality over quantity is key.

High expectations

Having too high and unrealistic expectations from your skincare is another common error. The skin is a living, breathing organ and it doesn’t have to meet society's idea of “perfect” in order to be healthy. Focus on nurturing and maintaining your skin health, appreciate it's individuality and understand your skin may have hang-ups from time to time.

When we make these mistakes in our skincare regime, it can lead to months (sometimes even years) of skin sensitivity due to an impaired skin barrier.

These symptoms can show up in a number of ways, including:

  • Sensitivity

  • Redness/Blotchy appearance

  • Acne

  • Rosacea

  • Irritation

  • Broken capillaries

  • Skin thinning and increased fragility

  • Increased melanocyte activity (leading to hyperpigmentation)

Why skincare is so important

Cleanses

The first function of a skincare routine is to clean the grime, dirt and make-up from the skin surface, to prepare it for the products to follow. A good cleanser will be non-drying and not strip the nourishing natural oils from the top layer of the skin.

Manages

Skincare helps to superficially manage certain activities in the skin that contribute to hyperpigmentation, breakouts, blotchiness and other symptoms associated with a compromised skin.

Moisturises

Skin products help to moisturise the outer layer of the skin and maintain hydration which is imperative to keep a healthy skin barrier in check.

Protects

Skincare, particular sunscreen helps to protect skin cells from damage caused by UV exposure and environmental aggressors. Protecting your skin from UV rays on a daily basis will also reduce the appearance of sun-induced hyperpigmentation.

Prevents

Committing to a healthy skincare routine will not halt the inevitable process of ageing, but slow down the appearance of ageing. By moisturising the barrier and keeping it protected from the environment, you will reduce features associated with ageing, such as fine lines, dull-looking and dehydrated skin, an uneven skin tone and texture.
